Introduction

Groups and businesses can achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions that are economically feasible and beneficial. This tab will help businesses and other types of organizations to estimate and measure their GHG emissions, reduce emissions and take actions to become carbon neutral.

Achieving carbon neutrality does not net emissions to zero, rather it balances GHG emissions reductions with offsets from outside the corporate boundary. This allows organizations to select the most cost effective means of reducing GHG emissions. There are four general steps:

  • Measure your GHG emissions and report this inventory as your annual total or carbon footprint;
  • Reduce your organizations GHG emissions as much as possible where technically and economically feasible;
  • Purchase renewable energy certifications to reduce the GHG emissions associated with generating the electricity your organization consumes if economically viable to your business operation;
  • Purchase carbon offsets from GHG emissions reducing activities that others have undertaken.

Finding the Tools You Need

This part of GreenRegistry.org provides businesses and organizations with access to a number of additional tools and resources to better understand and execute these steps.

Here you will find calculators to estimate GHG emissions from specific operational aspects. These can be uses to establish a GHG inventory or to provide a snapshot of the size of GHG emissions associated with specific aspects of your business.

The calculator’s allow the user to choose to offset just a portion of the organization’s GHG emissions. These calculators are generic and are based on recognized conservative GHG emissions quantification methodologies. They are a tool to estimate current GHG emissions and determine what potential reductions could be achieved if the organization undertook certain changes based on the options provided.

This part of the website also points to standards for establishing GHG inventories, measuring emissions from the organization and measuring emissions from specific projects. These are useful if there is a desire to establish a comprehensive high quality inventory and GHG emissions management system in the organization.

Large Projects

For groups undertaking a project for the purpose of creating verified emissions reductions (VERs) for sale in voluntary carbon markets, please proceed to the Project Toolbox tab. Large projects that create GHG emissions reductions for sale in the carbon markets need to follow standards for all aspects of the project including baseline estimating, quantifying emissions reductions, monitoring of emissions and registering of the project. These are described in the Project Toolbox tab.
