Become Carbon Neutral

GreenRegistry.org outlines the steps and provides tools and resources to help organizations become carbon neutral. These steps are explained in detail below.

Step 1: Measure Your Emissions

Your organization's carbon footprint is the estimated amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that are emitted to the atmosphere due to the organization's activities. This is measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This value is used as a baseline giving an idea of how much the sum of your organization's activities contribute to climate change.

Step 2: Reduce your Emissions

Once the baseline has been established opportunities to reduce GHG emissions can be considered. There are two major strategies: eliminating certain actions and changing others. None of an organizations actions are perfectly efficient and some may be unnecessary. There are countless opportunities to improve efficiency and make a large impact in reducing GHG emissions. Many of these actions will be easy to do and will likely not have any negative financial or operations affects. The best (easiest and cheapest, and most environmentally beneficial) action is to not have create any GHG emissions in the first place.

Every organization and group will be using electricity and fuels for heating, lighting and transportation. You can reduce electricity consumption to some degree. But for the consumption that remains, you can choose to purchase green energy. Green zero emitting energy including wind, hydro and solar is available from many suppliers and means that the GHG emissions from energy for your organization would be zero.

Step 3: Buy Emissions Offsets

After you have measured your GHG emissions, taken action to reduce GHG emissions and purchased non-emitting electricity, you will likely still be responsible for some GHG emissions. You can offset your remaining carbon emissions in order to be carbon neutral.

Offsetting means that you are buying GHG emissions reductions from someone else who has realized the GHG emissions reductions to sell due to a specific action that has been taken. These emissions reductions – called verified emissions reductions – have followed a process to ensure the integrity of the emissions reductions. For project developers interested in creating emissions reductions, please see the “Project Toolbox” tab for more information.
