What is Carbon Neutral?

Becoming carbon neutral is a multi-step process that can benefit an organization in many ways. The steps that need to be followed are explained in more detail in the following page on “Becoming Carbon Neutral”.

In order to help organizations achieve their climate neutral goals, the Manitoba government has developed tools for each step.

To be considered ’carbon neutral’ an organization must have no GHG emissions or carbon footprint - that is; all of the operations controlled by the organization result in zero GHG emissions. This does not necessarily mean that the organization cannot be responsible for any GHG emissions. Rather, that GHG emissions have been reduced, and any GHG emissions that the organization is responsible for are being offset by the purchase of verified emission reductions (VERs). These VERs are produced by other organizations which have invested in projects to reduce GHG emissions. Eligible projects may include non-emitting electricity generation, landfill gas methane capture or agriculture related projects such as the use of anaerobic digesters.

As well, groups, clubs and organizations may choose to go carbon neutral on just a part of their operations. For example, an organization may start by doing the following:

  • Purchase offsets for all air travel;
  • Make the annual office party or any conference that the organization delivers carbon neutral; or,
  • Make the office carbon neutral by offsetting GHG emissions from heating and cooling the building.

The steps and the tools on this website will help organizations to achieve carbon neutrality no matter how large or small the organization or level of commitment.
