Measure Your Emissions

In order to reduce your GHG emissions, you need to determine what activities lead to GHG emissions in the first place. Then you will be able to better decide which activities you should focus on.

You will need to decide how to measure your GHG emissions. There are many calculators and accepted GHG emissions measurement and quantification standards and protocols that you can use to inventory your GHG emissions. GreenRegistry.org website includes a number of GHG emissions calculators specifically developed for Manitoba organizations. These calculators allow you to input specific information about your organization and estimate the GHG emissions associated with the different operations. The calculators are not precise but are a useful first step in developing your GHG emissions inventory.

Beyond what can be estimated using the calculators, you may wish to consider the benefits of following internationally recognized standards for measuring inventories and establish a rigorous management system for GHG emissions monitoring. Following standards is useful if your organization in interested in:

  • Corporate risk management;
  • Voluntary initiatives to reduce GHG emissions;
  • GHG markets and selling verified emissions reductions (VERs);
  • Regulatory requirements for GHG emissions reporting or reductions.

GHG emission quantification standards provide guidance on how to proceed with the GHG emissions measurement process. GHG emissions calculators and internationally recognized protocols can be used to estimate GHG emissions from specific activities.

Use the information within GreenRegistry.org to calculate GHG emissions and access protocols and standards to guide you through the process of establishing a GHG emissions inventory.
