International standards have been developed to provide consistency and clarity on quantifying, monitoring, reporting, validating or verifying GHG inventories or projects.
The ISO 14064 GHG standards are used by groups and businesses that are interested in managing their GHG emissions because of involvement in the following applications:
- Corporate Risk Management: for example the identification and management of risks and opportunities;
- Voluntary Initiatives: for example, participation in voluntary GHG registries or reporting initiatives;
- GHG markets: for example, the buying and selling of GHG allowances or credits;
- Regulatory / government reporting; for example, credit for early action, negotiated agreements or national reporting programmes
Please consult the standards if your organization is looking to be involved in these types of initiatives.
CAN/CSA ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gases
ISO 14064 helps organizations and governments in measuring, reporting and verifying GHG emissions. Developed and approved by more than 50 countries, ISO 14064 has been approved as national standards of Canada. These standards will enable organizations and governments to use internationally agreed upon best practices to measure, report and verify GHG emission.
ISO 14064-1 Part 1 Specification with Guidance at the Organization Level for Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals
Part 1 specifies the principles and requirements at the organization level for quantification and reporting of GHG emissions and removals, and includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization's GHG inventory. It includes requirements for determining GHG emission boundaries, quantifying an organizations GHG emissions and removals and identifying specific company actions or activities aimed at improved GHG management. It also includes requirements and guidance on inventory quality management, reporting, internal auditing and the organization’s responsibilities for verification activities.
In addition, for those who are planning a GHG emissions reduction project that will lead to Verified Emissions Reductions, the methodologies used must be consistent with recognized quantification standards.
The ISO 14064 set of standards describe a process for delivering a GHG emissions reduction project. These standards are necessary for auditable projects and are also useful guidance for projects that will not be audited. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed the ISO 14064 standard for quantification and reporting GHG emissions and emissions reductions. For more information on these standards from a project basis, please the “Project Standards” link under the “Project Toolbox” tab. These standards can be purchased in hard copy format from the CSA who can also provide guidance on their functionality and use.
