In order to plan a GHG emissions reduction project that will lead to Verified Emissions Reductions, the methodologies used must be consistent with recognized quantification standards. Several standards have been developed that describe a process for delivering a GHG emissions reduction project. These standards are necessary for auditable projects and are also useful guidance for projects that will not be audited. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed the ISO 14064 standard for quantification and reporting GHG emissions and emissions reductions. These standards can be purchased in hard copy format from the CSA who can also provide guidance on their functionality and use.
CAN/CSA ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gases
ISO 14064 helps organizations and governments in measuring, reporting and verifying GHG emissions. Developed and approved by more than 50 countries, ISO 14064 has been approved as national standards of Canada. These standards will enable organizations and governments to use internationally agreed upon best practices to measure, report and verify GHG emission.
ISO 14064-1 Part 1 Specification with Guidance at the Organization Level for Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals
Part 1 specifies the principles and requirements at the organization level for quantification and reporting of GHG emissions and removals, and includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization's GHG inventory.
ISO 14064-2 Part 2 Specification with Guidance at the Project Level for Quantification, Monitoring and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions or Removal Enhancements
Part 2 specifies the principles and requirements and provides guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting of activities intended to cause GHG emission reductions or removal enhancements.
ISO 14064-3 Part 3 Specification with Guidance for the Validation and Verification of Greenhouse Gas Assertions
Part 3 specifies the principles and requirements and provides guidance for those conducting or managing the validation and/or verification of GHG assertions. This part of ISO 14064 may be applied to organizational or GHG project quantification, including GHG quantification, monitoring and reporting carried out in accordance with ISO 14064-1 or ISO 14064-2.
