A GHG project is a specific identifiable project or action that is undertaken and that may have GHG emissions reductions associated with it. Projects need to follow a particular process and meet certain criteria as laid out by a GHG emissions reduction program (voluntary or regulated) or an international standard to create GHG emissions reductions.
A project proponent who is developing a project is responsible for filling out and preparing the documentation required by the GHG program. This will include a project document and will likely include validation of the project document as well as verification of the GHG emissions reductions once the project is operating.
The project proponent will also need to register the project and the documentation with the regulator or on a public registry. This ensures that the project is transparent, credible and avoids the risk of double counting the GHG emissions reductions. International standards such as ISO 14064 layout the best practices for ensuring that the GHG emissions reductions from a GHG project are credible.
